0:01 AM 2016 Daytona 500 Post Race Report | |
The 2016 Daytona 500 was a great race to open up the Sprint Cup Series. With a few rookies having their first tries at the Daytona 500, the race was pretty interesting. Chase Elliott led a few laps, but spun out, and damaged his car. He would later re-enter the race, but he would be down by 40 laps. Chris Buescher and Matt DiBenedetto also had difficulties. They both spun coming out of turn 4, similarly to Danica Patrick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. later in the race. The race came down to a long green stretch, where the race would be decided by inches. Coming around the final turn, Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin were fighting for the lead. Truex Jr. had a slight lead over Hamlin, but when side-drafted, Truex fell slightly behind, giving Hamlin the Daytona 500 win. This was Denny Hamlin's first Daytona 500 win.
