2014 Sprint Unlimited Report

Twenty drivers were able to drive in the Unlimited but only eighteen did.  Mark Martin and Ken Schrader didn't race.  There were numerous crashes including an eight car crash, which took out Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Danica Patrick, Rickey Stenhouse Jr....  Jimmy Johnson as well as Matt Kenseth just lost control and spun.   Dale Earnhardt Jr. was taken out of the race on lap 66.  The favorite to win the race went over Marcos Ambrose's hood and hit the wall, causing damage to his right front fender and tire.  Kevin Harvick had a tough time and was fighting just to stay with the pack for most of the race.  He then managed to get as high as 3rd with three laps to go.  Danica Patrick was not even close to the pack during the first segment, but she went all the way to 3rd in a matter of seconds.  When the eight car crash occurred, she went low into the dirt and then spun out.  She managed to save it, [and would have been able to continue the race] but Rickey Stenhouse Jr. went "blindly" into Danica's back fender and destroyed most of the left side of her car.  Denny Hamlin lead the most laps of the race and won segments one and two.  He was in last place for much of segment three, but with three laps to go he passed everyone on the low side and claimed the lead.  He then held the lead for the rest of the race.  Congratulations to Denny Hamlin and Joe Gibbs Racing.

Don't forget the pace car catching fire. Major car recall. Brett Bodine, the driver of the car went into proactive mode by driving to the emergency vehicle instead of waiting for it to come to him. Cool but risky. A shout out to the Bodines.
