Carl Edwards has gotten close to winning the Sprint Cup Championship a few times.  Edwards got 3rd in 2005, 2nd in 2008, 4th in 2010, and 2nd in 2011.  Carl was tied for first in the 2011 standings, but since Tony Stewart did better then him at Homestead-Miami Speedway, (Final race of the season) Stewart got 1st and Carl got another close season cut short.  Carl Edwards has one of the most consistent performances in the Sprint Cup.  He has an overall starting position average of 15.5, and an overall finishing position average of 13.3.  Carl Edwards has never not qualified for a race and out of 337 starts he has only had 21 DNFs.  Carl Edwards is definitely a top 15, and possibly top ten driver.  It is true that Carl Edwards as well as his teammate Greg Biffle's contracts expire at the end of the 2014 season.  Roush Fenway Racing has stated that they have every intent on resigning both drivers as soon as they are able to.
