2014 UNOH Battle at the Beach post race report

This is a double header combination race for the Whelen Modified Tour (and Southern Modified Tour) and the K&N Pro Series East. (and West)  This track is a small .4 mile oval on Daytona's backstretch.  This track is similar to Martinsville by overall shape.

Whelen Modified Tour (North and South)

Pole Position - Ryan Preece

Winner - Doug Coby

Doug Coby was the 2012 Whelen Modified Series Champion.  This was Coby's first race with his new team when he switched to the number 2 car last post season.  Ryan Preece lead most of the race and was looking like he was going to win until he collided with a lapped car. (Dave Sapienza)  As a result of the crash Preece had a severely bent left rear tire.  On the following restart [the leader] Patrick Emerling spun entering turn one, which gave Doug Coby the lead.  Even though Ryan Preece had a damaged left rear tire he continued to race and managed to pull off a 4th place finish.  Southern Modified Tour drivers like Luke Fleming and Burt Myers finished 3rd and 5th.

K&N Pro Series (East and West)

Pole Position - Ben Rhodes

Winner - Daniel Suarez

Daniel Suarez won the first race of the K&N Pro Series East this year (New Smyrna 150) and managed to win the UNOH Battle at the Beach as well.  Suarez started the race in 6th, but he managed to lead the final 17 laps, and win by more then half a second.  In Suarez's last ten races he has had eight podium finishes.  Suarez is also the first driver since 2006 to win the first K&N Pro Series races.  Kenzie Ruston had one of the fastest cars and managed to get to 2nd until she got mixed in with a crash on lap 77.  She did managed to fight back after she spun and finished in 6th place.  Both Ruston and Suarez are drivers to look out for this year, and they are also drivers who might soon climb the NASCAR ranks and get into a higher division.

If you didn't see any of these races you should find a video clip, its interesting to see them race on the back straightaway.

Kind of how the Rolex 24 hours race is interesting to see, look that up if you haven't heard of it. It's like the unofficial start to speedweeks every year.
